Diploma in Music
The School of Music recognises that the musicians of today require a wide range of skills and knowledge to help them stay relevant to the industry and to the wider community. The Diploma in Music course aims to train versatile and confident musicians with the skills and knowledge necessary to develop an assured ability in performance, or composition. Through high-level training in principal study and a practice-led curriculum, students will be equipped with technical and musical skills in their instrument/composition, along with theoretical, conceptual and contextual knowledge essential to their musical development and understanding of the musical discourse. In addition, they will also develop practical skills and knowledge to prepare them for the music industry, which include musicians’ health and well-being, digital skills, and career skills. The course is also unique in that it offers specialised pathways for the training of Western or Chinese music, and students have the added opportunity to attend and to participate in cross-cultural performances.
Other core units in professional studies, contextual studies, and aural and musicianship classes provide support and depth to their study and help develop key skills in areas such as communication, digital technology, collaborative work, problem solving and study skills, with the aim to enhance employability. Students are also exposed to the industry through Industry Projects, Teaching Practice, Industrial Attachments or Overseas Immersion Projects, which help them acquire interpersonal skills and work values within a professional environment.
In addition, the course leverages on NAFA’s cultural heritage and multidisciplinary environment, and offers students the opportunity to engage in interdisciplinary projects which push the boundaries of their discipline, contributing to the development of the arts scene.
